Explain clearly what is understood by the meaning of Leadership. What is the distinction between Leadership and Management - Essay Example The paper will discuss certain leadership taxonomies and definitions and will also explore a few leadership theories in order to get an insight into leadership. The second part of the paper will strive to find out the main discrepancies between management and leadership and the reasons as to why both are assets to an organization. Both functions are complementary to each other and without the existence of any one of the two it becomes impossible for the other to perform effectively thereby impairing organizational growth. Contents Abstract 2 Contents 3 Introduction 4 Insights into leadership 5 Leadership theories 6 Leadership and management – a distinction 8 Conclusion 10 Reference 11 Introduction One of the most popular and discussed topic is leadership. Scholars have tried to define leadership in several manners. In an examination of 587 publications, at least 221 definitions of leadership had emerged. Leadership is the manner in which an individual induces aspects of respec t, obedience, cooperation and loyalty among followers. Leadership in the 1930s was considered to be an area where organizations had to move depending on specifications provided by the leader. The 40’s definition of leadership focussed on the constructs of power, authority, circumstances and position. The 1950s definition emphasized on the essentials of team building and the authority the leader commanded on team members. The 1960s definition of leadership influenced followers to shared goals and vision. The 1970s leadership definition viewed a leader to have discretionary powers and 1980s the leader inspired the followers to conduct meaningful activity. The 1990s defined leadership as a combined task accomplished by both followers and leader to make certain modifications impacting common purposes. The first ten years of the twenty first century witnessed the leader to be solely accountable and responsible for all activities conducted in an organization. From the above, it may be observed that there are certain themes in leadership. These are as follows: a) Leadership is not limited to senior management members or the top boss b) Leadership helps in excelling performance level in followers c) Management and leadership are two distinct constructs d) There is a humanistic and sensitive dimension to leadership e) Leaders need to apply a host of skills, capabilities, qualities thereby undertaking a holistic approach f) An individual who has expertise in implementing, initiating and anticipating change is a successful leader (Bass & Bass, 2008) Insights into leadership Leadership styles vary from person to person. However, the manner in which one may be able to aptly distinguish various leaders depends on the manner in which they act on logic. This is the skill to interpret and analyze surroundings especially when they are challenged by some external or internal issues. Academic scholars have observed that leaders who delved deep within them to develop and un derstand themselves can transform their own capabilities as well as the capabilities of the organization. The effectiveness of organizations mainly depends on coordinated leadership which stems from leaders having varied levels of hierarchy. Their skills help in impacting individuals, units, teams and the overall organizational results. Academic study on leadership has highlighted that leadership significantly impact units, teams and the entire organization. Although there is vast literature on the outcomes of effective

Reasons for the Apparent Rise of New Religious Movements Assignment

Reasons for the Apparent Rise of New Religious Movements - Assignment Example The phenomenon behind new religious movements (NRMs) is, arguably, not new, since NRM is concerned with a groups of religious bodies or movements that entail an isolated and particular set of attributes, that have been assigned to the fringes of the dominant religious culture and by elements within the secular culture, in context of a set of religious movements that exist in a relatively contested society as a whole. It has been observed that "[m]any religious movements were born and prospered, either as the development of well-known religious traditions or as the result of a syncretic approach to different religions. In many cases their doctrines and practices differed widely from those of the mainstream religions: moreover, the "closed" structure of some of these groups, the unconventional behavior of their members, and some tragic events in which they were involved gave rise to considerable social alarm" (Ferrari, 2006, p.2). Thus, the NRMs have in many cases appropriated the anti -systemic feelings in an efficient manner and have successfully channelized into themselves in order to achieve their (un)declared goals vis--vis legitimate social and political institutions. II. When Religion Returns to a Haunted New World Order Interestingly, NRMs are often identified as 'sect' in a number of European languages "("secure" in French, "settle" in Italian, "sea" in Spanish, "Sekte" in German)" (Ferrari, 2006, p.2). Mostly, such sects are formed by a "group of dissenters who separated from a larger religious group" and popularly indicated as a collection of a "narrow-minded and fanatical group of people" (ibid, p.2).

Apple should move to a bazaar, or open source, model of development Essay

Apple should move to a bazaar, or open source, model of development similar to Android because this model promotes innovat - Essay Example Prior to the conversion, it was the â€Å"bazaar† system which was commonly adopted by companies all around the world. Raymond (2001) unambiguously specifies regarding the advantages to implement an open source business model towards obtaining greater competitive advantages and scope for continuous development through innovation. One of the most prominent examples to identify the virtues of an â€Å"open source† business model can be regarded with reference to the case of Android software. Notably, it was the open source development model which promoted commercial business of software that further augmented the variables for competition, motivating the major market players to actively participate in product innovation. Hence, from a long term perspective, it becomes apparent that open-source models are likely to be beneficial with regard to industry development and customer satisfaction (Olaleye, â€Å"Open Source Business Model for Mobile Computing: Android Open Sourc e Pt. 1†). However, there are a few companies which yet focus on implementing closed business model emphasizing on strict licensing policies such as Apple Incorporation. Thesis Statement Concentrating on the virtues of an open source business model, this essay will intend to evaluate the appropriateness of adopting an open source business model over a â€Å"bazaar† system to promote product innovation and quality enhancement in case of Apple. Thus, the discussion will attempt to justify whether Apple should move towards adopting an open source model similar to Android. Discussion In the context of present mobile market, Apple Incorporation is often regarded as a leading brand in the IT industry maintaining a particular brand reputation in the minds of the customer. In its business process, Apple had been marketing its software products with copyright licensing which meant that people would have to buy the product code before downloading or installing the software in the ir PC or Mac book. On the other hand, another technology industry giant, Google incorporation has been offering its most demanded software Android, uses an open source model which is based on Linux operating system. In this open source Model, customers are allowed to directly download applications or software in their devices in exchange of minimum or zero monetary value. Certainly, owing to their differing business models, the two software companies have gained dissimilar results in terms of product demand, customer satisfaction and competitive advantages. For instance, customers of Apple products (such as Mac book or iPhone) need to purchase the license before installing the software on their devices in exchange of a specified amount. Even though purchasing license tends to boost customer confidence in terms of quality concerns, it has also been observed to hamper their satisfaction level owing to the complex transaction process and limited choices. On the contrary, the software p ackages of Android is available at a much simpler process along with choices which in turn tends to increase customer satisfaction level; however, it also tends to inhibit customer confidence concerning their quality demanded. Therefore, from a short run perspective, the open-source business model can be termed as advantageous, but from a long-run perspective, t

Political science 5030 - Term Paper Example In midst of this, all stock prices also began to drop. Finally, On October 24, 1929, the stock market crashed burst, as investors began dumping shares. When 16 million shares finally possessed no value, the dark era of the Great Depression started. The Great Depression was a turning point for America to find its true identity. Social and economic change was not only necessary but vital towards the success of America itself. While recession continued to haunt countries worldwide, the progressive movement and the new deal established a solid ground for fundamental change. The progressive movement represented a logical evolution from the Progressive Era because it introduced new programs, embedded reform and paved the way for greatness for the nation as outlined by the Progressive Era. The progressive movement and the new deal in essence were similar in many ways. First and foremost was the fact that it halted the progress of rebellion that was about to up heal during the industrial era. The progressive movement introduced new economic programs. The effort to improve society was a major push that was new to the nation as key issues such as reforming working conditions and assisting the mentally ill people challenged the whole notion of old traditions. Progressivism at its best aimed to remove corruption by imposing child labor laws, addressing lynching based on racism, and removing politicians that were involved in illegal business practices. At the local level, progressivism continued to display brilliant signs of reform as the construction of schools was pushed, political machines were dissolved, and politics was addressed in an efficient manner. Similarly, the New Deal, was a focal point of domestic reform. Roosevelt’s New Deal was considered of two phas es that were planned to recovery and relief. These were crucial towards the toad to recovery. The first phase concentrated on

Reaction paper 5 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Reaction paper 5 - Essay Example Therefore, an alternative currency will help in restoring the confidence based on the dramatic rise in the price of gold. Additionally, the essence of gold is that no one can make more of it than what already is in the ground (Alan, Javier & Robin, 2010). As a result, this will help curb inflation. Another advantage of gold as a currency is in helping policymakers using it as a measure of investor’s concern about the fate of other currencies. Moreover, there has been increased investment in gold by new investors than before, and this has made it easier to buy and sell bullion (Alan, Javier & Robin, 2010). In addition, the gold as a currency has shown that it is not easy to be debased. On the other hand, there are arguments against the use of gold as a currency. The argument is that alternative currency will still have its own problems. For example, the Eurozone has fractured bond market while there is also no free trade on China’s renminbi (Alan, Javier & Robin, 2010). The other argument is that gold currency is prone to deflation based on its continuous rise in price. Consequently, such a high rise does not help in predicting a rise in the price of other

You can decide Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

You can decide - Essay Example Some of the fossils propose a geographical diversity and a difference in characteristics are KNM-ER 1808 and Trinil 2. In 1891, an archeologist named Eugene Dubois found angular, domed, and thick-walled human skullcap with a large shelf like brow ridge near Trinil, Java (Indonesia. He decided that the skull be named Trinil2 (Dorey). Another person, Kamoya Kimeu in 1974 discovered a 1.7 million years old femur of Homo erectus KNM-ER1808 in Koobi Fora in Kenya. This female Homo erectus has an incredible distinct feature that surprised the researchers; it has an abnormal layer of bone on her thigh that shows evidence of bleeding to her death. Scientists have concluded that it is an overdose of vitamin A. The two skulls have some significant differences between them. Trinil 2 has a long, flat forehead, distinct brow ridges and have sagittal keel (Dorey). The cranium of Trinil 2 is thick brow ridges that are sharply angled rear where the neck muscles attach. When the Trinil femur is compared with KNM-ER 1808, one will see that Trinil is considerably ‘human’ while the other is more of Homo er ectus. The skeleton of KNM-ER 1808 has almost complete right femur but unfortunately lacking a head. There have numerous changes in the evolution of the hominid that have occurred. These changes have significantly contributed to the change in the proportion of the skull. Different parts of the skull in various hominids are varying proportion. The change from one hominid can be noticed in face size, shape, brain capacity and even position of occipital condyles. In this Lab report, we shall measure different proportions, calculate indices and compare them with known or commonly recognized hominines species. 2. When the location of the points are known, connect their location with lines (porion intersects lowest point of the eye orbit such that line almost touch top circle and bottom edge). Violence in Prisons Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Violence in Prisons - Research Paper Example Their situation is made worse by the fact that they are placed in confined environments in their hundreds while the manpower to watch over them is hugely outnumbered. Within the inmate population there is therefore high prevalence of violence incidences. Inmates also experience violence from the guards and vice versa. Prison violence therefore is not a surprising phenomenon not only in the United States but also in the rest of the world. This paper shall therefore elaborate on the different types of prison violence, reasons for this violence and the various solutions to solving prison violence menace. Byrne et al. (2008) state that prison violence comes in various forms namely violence of a prisoner towards another prisoner, prisoner violence on officers and officers violating prisoners. Prisoners in the United States have for a long time developed a gang rule culture which is attributed to be the biggest cause of prisoner violence on a fellow prisoner. Gangs have been seen have a form of territorial control in prisons where members of gangs have better access to facilities and inherent protection rights from gang members. These gangs recruit people to join them where there are rituals while joining which are not necessarily as rosy considering the privileges that accompany their membership in the harsh prison environment. Incidences of sexual harassment and rape have been reported as quite common during recruitment (Jones and Pratt, 2008). It also important to note that in a single prison there can be a number of gangs which obviously compete for the available privileges and res ources, for example the cells to occupy and the kind of chores to engage in. This competition breeds violent acts towards members of other gang members. This escalates the prevalence of prisoner to prisoner violence. In cases of extreme violent conducts prisoners even murder
